Honest information about what a qualification actually leads to
The problem
Young people choose courses on the basis of marketing, and discover the employment reality only afterwards.
Why it matters
Three years and a family loan are too expensive a way to find out that a course does not lead anywhere.
Proposed solution
Publish outcome data by course and institution where it can be obtained: placement rate, median starting salary, and the response rate behind both figures.
How it would be implemented
Aggregate published institutional data and alumni surveys, always with the response rate stated next to the figure.
Risks, and what we would do about them
Risk
Low response rates produce flattering and misleading numbers.
Mitigation
Refuse to publish any figure without its response rate. Suppress figures below a minimum response threshold.
